Business Colleges have come under fire in recent years for the financial crisis, while the implosion of firms like Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns robbed graduates of traditional employment landing spots. A business degree at a leading school like Stanford costs $275,000 in tuition and forgone salary on average, but it still pays off.

Why? Business Colleges is still one of the best ways to jump start your career and hiring has picked up after two lackluster years with 57% already having a job offer three months before graduation compared to 40% in 2010 according to a survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council which administers the GMAT exam.

Our ranking of M.B.A. programs focuses on the return on investment that graduates receive attending business school. Harvard Business School nabbed the top spot this year for the first time since 2003 (former No. 1 Stanford dropped to second). Graduates in Harvard’s Class of 2006 saw their median salaries soar from $79,000 before school to $230,000 in 2010, which was the highest among U.S. schools.

Harvard launched the world’s first M.B.A. program in 1908 with 80 students and 15 faculty. The class that will graduate in 2012 has 903 students in it. Competition to attend HBS is fierce as 9,524 people applied for a spot in the ’12 Class, but only 11% were accepted.

Former Enron head Jeffrey Skilling (HBS Class of ’79) brought the school unwanted attention when the energy giant collapsed and he was sentenced to 24 years in jail. Yet, one of Harvard’s greatest draws is its alumni network. The school has 70,000 alumni in more than 150 countries.

Alumni include billionaires like Michael Bloomberg and hedge fund titan John Paulson. America’s boardrooms are littered with HBS grads like JPMorgan Chase head Jamie Dimon and James McNerney of Boeing. There is even a former President (George W. Bush) and one who hopes to be (Mitt Romney).

Our seventh biennial ranking of business schools is based on the return on investment achieved by the graduates from the class of 2006. We surveyed 16,000 alumni at more than 100 schools and heard back from 30% of those grads. We compared their earnings in their first five years out of business school to their opportunity cost (two years of forgone compensation, tuition and required fees) to arrive at a “5-year M.B.A. Gain.” Harvard’s median 5-year gain was $118,000 .

The MBA Career Services Council reports that 76% of U.S. schools had more on-campus recruitment activity this year than in 2010. While hiring has rebounded this year for b-school grads, it is still below the levels of 2008. In response students are broadening their horizons from the traditional consulting and banking gigs.Google, Amazon.com, Facebook and Apple rank near the top of current M.B.A. wish lists as employers according to a survey of students at highly ranked schools by consultant Universum.

Tuition at the best business schools has soared in recent years ($115,000 including fees for two years at Columbia). To make the tuition bite more palatable, schools have increased grants and scholarships more than 50% the past six years. The 74 U.S. schools we ranked handed out an average of $26,000 to 55% of students in the graduating class of 2010.

UCLA’s Anderson School of Management has doubled what they hand out over the past six years. Harvard is up 78% to $49,000 per student during that time. Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business has almost tripled its aid to $37,000 per student. These increases all go to boost the return on investment for new students.

Atlanta worker payment dropped slightly between Q2 and Q3 of 2011, continuing a trend of small upward and downward quarterly movement since early 2010. Earnings in Atlanta are essentially unchanged from a year ago.

2007-2010: After rising on par with national trends in 2007, wage gains in Atlanta slowed compared to the rest of the country during 2008, showing early signs of the coming recession, ending the year with little growth.

After that, Atlanta employees’ earnings suffered a sharp drop in 2009, plummeting 2 percent from their peak. The market price for Atlanta workers changed very little in 2010.

Physical therapy ranked highest in job satisfaction, according to a survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago in 2008. More than three quarters of physical therapists reported being “very satisfied” with their occupation. In a similar survey by the Wall Street Journal‘s Career Journal, physical therapy rated one of the eight best careers.

And it’s easy to understand why:

You’re a one-on-one coach, a role that many people enjoy. It’s a bit like a fitness coach but with more skills and you’re helping people with more acute problems.

You usually see real progress. For example, it’s touching to see a patient, who came in on a stretcher or in a wheelchair, walk out at the end of treatment.

Unlike physicians, who often are restricted to 12-minute appointments, you typically see a patient for an hour.

You have considerable autonomy in how to solve problems, yet, unlike in self-employment, you can get a steady and pretty good paycheck.

There’s variety: Most physical therapists are generalists. You might treat, for example, a brain-injured child, a football player who broke his arm, an Iraq War veteran amputee, and an aged stroke patient.

You can choose from a wide range of work settings, notably hospitals, physical therapy clinics, schools, physicians’ offices, and patients’ homes.

Unlike many other health professionals who must work nights and weekends, you usually have normal work hours.

Despite increased use of lower-cost physical therapy assistants, the job market for physical therapists is projected to remain strong as the baby boomers are reaching the age where they get more weekend-warrior athlete injuries and more serious problems.

Like all careers, physical therapy has downsides:

This career is physically demanding. All day, you’re moving patients around, demonstrating exercises, and so on. That’s a plus for some people and a minus for others who might prefer a desk job. It’s not uncommon to leave work with sore muscles.

Burnout risk. Many of your patients will be newly disabled, in pain, progressing slowly, and/or frustrated by the painful exercises you prescribe. That can take a toll on you.

Training requirements have been ratcheted up. Not long ago, a bachelor’s degree would do. Now, a master’s is the minimum, with a three-year doctor of physical therapy increasingly the norm.

Nevertheless, if you’re a science- and helping-oriented person, fascinated with the human body, and have an optimistic personality, a physical therapy career may heal your career pains.

Today I will suggest a Court Reporting Program in New York: The Court and Realtime Reporting Academic Program of Alfred State College.

This Court Reporting Program prepares students for careers as official, freelance, realtime reporters, and captioners. Jobs are available for competent court reporters to work in all fields of reporting, including realtime and closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

One feature of the court and realtime reporting program is the development of high recording skills to 225-plus words per minute through the use of realtime translation machine shorthand and computer aided transcription (CAT). In the first year, students learn realtime shorthand theory and develop computer skills that will enhance their overall employability. The prerequisite for entering the specialized court reporting course in the summer session is the attainment of a minimum recording speed of 90 words per minute. Development of skills in recording and transcribing specialized court reporting matter starts in the summer term and continues through the second year. Students in their senior year elect to go in to judicial or broadcast captioning.

All entering students are required to purchase their own computerized shorthand machine and student software in order to practice realtime writing outside the class. The approximate cost of this equipment is $2,000 and should be included in college expenses.

The College offers court reporting-related courses (courses with a CTRP prefix) over the Internet, making it possible for students who transfer in credit or attend other colleges to earn their certificate from Alfred State College in court and realtime reporting. The Internet approach still requires two years of course work and does not change any of the standards reflected in graduation requirements for all students. The Internet approach is designed for those who are currently working and seeking a change in career, single parents, or individuals who cannot attend college campus.

Some friends want to be a nurse and then a Certified Nurse Anesthetist, and ask me some questions like these:

I wanted to know how long need to attend school to become a nurse anesthetist?

What is the education required to become one? Is it difficult to do?

And how much money does one make? Also, direct me to any programs for this in San Francisco if you can.

Here is the simple guide to be a Certified Nurse Anesthetist:

You need to become a RN before becoming a CRNA. You need a masters degree to become a CRNA. First you would need to get a BSN (4 year nursing degree). Mostgraduate programs require some type of experience working as a nurse before you can apply to the graduate program. So you would need to work as a RN for a few years, and then apply to a CRNA program. So you are looking at 4 or 5 years to get your BSN, 2 or 3 years of clinical experience, and then another 2 years to become a CRNA. You are looking at a minimum of 8 years, and that is if you complete everything on time and are choosing to go to school full time.

You might find that it is difficult to be working towards a goal for this long, but it can be rewarding in the end. Becoming a CRNA is very stressful, as many see it as you are basically responsible for your patient’s life. If it is something you strive to do, then the time will not matter. CRNA’s make very good money. Any nurse with an advanced degree will make at least 70,000 and easily 80,000 or 90,000 with experience.

Look at colleges around your area with a BSN program first. You may decide that you want to go to graduate school somewhere else so it’s not necessary to find one at this point. Start off with getting into the college, finishing your prerequisites with good grades, and then apply to the nursing program of your choice. Keep in mind that nursing programs and becoming increasingly competitive and some even have mile long waiting lists, so it’s in your best interest to take your prerequisite courses seriously and do well in them.
