Records examination, testimony, judicial opinions, judge’s charge to jury, judgment or sentence of court, or other proceedings in court of law using shorthand, a stenotype machine, or audio tapes. Reads portions of transcript during trial on judge’s request, and asks speakers to clarify inaudible statements. Typically requires a two-year college degree in a related field; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.

Operates word processor or computer to transcribe recorded material, or dictates material into recording machine. Edits the transcript for syntax and grammar. May record proceedings of quasi-judicial hearings and formal and informal meetings. May be self-employed, performing duties in court of law or at hearings and meetings.
